Askalu Asfaha

"In Germany, I can have my own opinion and ask all the questions I have. That means freedom for me. "

"My name is Askalu and I am from Eritrea. I am 22 years old. I came to Germany with my husband one year and six months ago. I like the life in Germany very much. I had to work as a soldier in Eritrea for four years. In my country, Christians and Muslims live in peace. There are no problems. In Sudan and Libya there are many problems. I am a Christian and I wear a cross, so I have big problems there. Many of my friends have been killed. I walked from Eritrea to Ethiopia and Sudan 13 days. And then to Libya by car. On the crossing from Libya we had nothing to eat for four days, only to drink. But it wasn't bad, I didn't feel hungry because I had Europe in mind. Now I am in Berlin. I like it very much. I thank God." Askalu Asfaha is from Mendefera, Eritrea, and has lived in Berlin since 2015. In 2017, she began to catch up on her secondary schooling because her degree - twelve years of school - was not recognized. (Unlike her husband's degree, although they both attended the same school). Following this, Askalu would like to train as a geriatric nurse.
